On the side of a mountain, lava from an erupting volcano cools to form a rock. As time passes and the world around it changes, the rock transforms. Shaped by wind, water, and pressure, it goes through all the stages of the rock cycle: igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic. With each new lifetime, it witnesses more of Earth’s history: the rise and fall of dinosaurs, the passing of ice ages, the splitting of continents. Like the planet we live on, the rocks at our feet are far from unchanging—they are constantly reborn.
